IMD Warns of Prolonged Severe Heatwave Across Andhra Pradesh

The India Meteorological Department has issued a severe heatwave alert for several coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, warning that the scorching weather is likely to continue for at least the next four to five days. Districts such as East Godavari, Konaseema, Eluru, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam, Nellore and Bapatla are expected to remain under severe heatwave conditions until May 25.

Northern coastal regions including Visakhapatnam, Kakinada and Anakapalle are also likely to experience extremely high temperatures. In the Rayalaseema region, temperatures are expected to hover between 41°C and 44°C over the coming days.

Weather officials have also indicated that there is currently no strong possibility of rain or thunderstorms, meaning residents may not get immediate relief from the blistering conditions.

The heatwave has pushed temperatures to alarming levels across the state. Piduguralla in Palnadu district recorded 48.1°C, the highest temperature of the season so far in Andhra Pradesh.

Several other areas also witnessed extreme heat. Vetapalem and Nandiwada recorded 47.6°C, while Addanki and Thorragudipadu touched 47.4°C. Many districts including Bapatla, Amaravati, Ongole, Nellore and Kavali reported temperatures above 45°C.

According to state disaster management authorities, at least 18 districts have crossed the 45°C mark in recent days. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema continue to remain 2 to 3 degrees above normal seasonal temperatures, making this one of the harshest heat spells of the year.
