Heatwave to Persist Across Delhi-NCR

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that severe heatwave conditions are expected to continue across Delhi-NCR and Haryana until May 28. Although the intensity of the heatwave slightly reduced on Friday after four consecutive days of extreme heat, residents are unlikely to get major relief anytime soon.

According to IMD, a weak western disturbance may bring light cloud cover and brief thunderstorms on Saturday. This could lower temperatures by one or two degrees temporarily, but the relief is expected to be short-lived. From Sunday onward, temperatures are predicted to rise sharply once again.

Temperature Likely to Reach 46°C

The weather department has issued an orange alert for several parts of Delhi between Saturday and May 28. Maximum temperatures are expected to remain between 43°C and 45°C on Saturday, while from Sunday onwards, the mercury may climb further to 44°C-46°C.

The scorching heat is not limited to daytime alone. Night temperatures are also staying unusually high, making conditions uncomfortable for residents. On Friday, the minimum temperature was recorded at 29.3°C, which was three degrees above normal. The previous night saw the season’s hottest night at 31.9°C, making it one of the warmest May nights recorded since 2012.

The impact of the heatwave in Haryana is also being felt across Delhi-NCR, worsening weather conditions in the region. Safdarjung weather station recorded a maximum temperature of 43.3°C on Friday, while Delhi’s Ridge area touched 44.4°C, the highest in the capital.

IMD has advised people to avoid direct sunlight during afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and step outside only when necessary. Experts believe there are currently no strong signs of significant relief from the ongoing heatwave in the coming days.
