Change in incentives doubles suffering of Ola Uber drivers

The cab aggregators’ change of incentives plan from this year has given the body blow to drivers attached to Ola and Uber. Their work satisfaction level has started to take a hit as the income has started to slump.

Drivers who are largely from lower and upper middle class said that the idea of luring them with lucrative offers is itself a hoax. Ola promises to pay an incentive of ₹ 6,300 at the end of the day if a driver manages to get a business worth ₹2,300.  The driver has to complete 18 trips per day in that case. However, the traffic in Bengaluru somehow allows them to complete five trips per day.

"I have managed only ₹ 600 and if I pay this to the company what will I get? I can't even afford the fuel cost. Plus I have to pay monthly instalment to bank and private money lenders for the purchase of the cab," said Sunil a driver from RR Nagar.

Like Sunil, Chandrashekhar from Audogudi said that he has not been able to pay the monthly rentals of ₹ 7,000 for the last two months as his earnings have slumped. “A year ago when I had joined, I was able to get 25,000 a month after all the deduction and other expenses. Now there is a drop by ₹ 10,000. As the cab aggregators have started to complicate incentives, the monthly earnings are getting badly affected.

Drivers who thought that their life would be better after getting attached with brands like Ola and Uber are saying that their growth social and financial growth have become stagnant.

"People call us; we zip through bad traffic and reach the customer. Then the customer changes mind and cancels the trip. In few cases the drivers are waylaid by anti social elements and attacked for ransom,” said Jeevan, who is an Ola cab driver from Jigini.

He also added that, waiting in places like City Railway station, Bus Terminus and Metro junction to pick customers has proven to be costly many a times as the police deflate their car tyres. "All these issues cannot be explained to the customers and our aggregators. We only have to suffer loss," Jeevan added.

With Ola coming out with its own cars for ₹ 15,000 in festival offer, the drivers are paying this meagre amount and are joining. The drivers who have been working with this company for long time are facing the problem.
