The laws have already been stayed till further orders by the Supreme Court, which has formed a controversial committee to resolve the deadlock.

The farmers have been camping at the Delhi borders for several weeks and are demanding a repeal of the farm laws and a legal guarantee to the minimum support price for crops.

The Supreme Court has in a landmark interim order directed that the Centre's 3 farm laws be kept in abeyance till the deadlock between the Centre and protesting farmers is resolved. The Apex Court, however, clarified that the implementation of the farm laws was not being stayed indefinitely.

The Supreme Court has made vital observations in the case pertaining to the petitions filed against the Centre's new farm laws. Among them, the bench of Chief Justice of India, SA Bobde and Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian said it was in favour of keeping the three farm laws in abeyance till the deadlock between the Centre and protesting farmers is resolved.

Another round of talks between farmer unions and the Centre has failed to break the deadlock over farm laws. While the government remained firm on its stand that it will not repeal the contentious laws, the farmers union reiterated the same demand.

The government and farm unions reached some common ground on December 30 to resolve protesting farmers' concerns over rise in power tariff and penalties for stubble burning, but the two sides remained deadlocked over the main contentious issues of the repeal of three farm laws and a legal guarantee for MSP.

Thousands of farmers, mainly from Punjab and Haryana, are protesting at Delhi borders for more than three weeks. At least five rounds of formal talks have been held between the Centre and 40 farmer unions to break the deadlock, but the unions are demanding complete rollback of these laws.

Even as the deadlock continues between farmers and the Centre over farm laws, attempts are being made to spread panic among protesters camping on the outskirts of Delhi.

Chief Justice of India SA Bobde tells Solicitor General Tushar Mehta that the court intends to set up a committee comprising representatives of farmers' unions across India, government and other stakeholders "because this will soon become a national issue".

Even as the deadlock between protesting farmers and the Centre continued with no consensus being arrived at during their meetings, there is a view emerging among government negotiators that the protests have been stage-managed and farmers have been misled.
