Make or break for Indian shooters Chenai and Manavjit at Rio today

Indian trap shooters Kynan Chenai, Manavjit Singh keep India's hope alive in Rio 2016

India's trap shooting duo Kynan Chenai and Manavjit Singh endured a disappointing day at the Rio Olympics on Sunday. Kynan and Manavjit finished at a poor position of 17 and 19 respectively during Day 1 of the qualification round.

 

In the men's trap event, each shooter took 75 shots. While Manavjit scored 23, 23, 22 out of 75, Kynan posted 22, 23, 22 in the three rounds at the Olympic shooting centre.

 

They will return today for Day 2 of qualification where there will be two more rounds of 25 targets each.

 

Manavjit was placed at 14th while Kynan was pegged at a disappointing 28th after the completion of the first round. The former improved a place with a score of 46 in the second round, while Chenai too rose to the 16th spot with a score of 45.

 

At the top, Italy's Fabbrizi Massimo was the only shooter to produce a record score of 75, while Great Britain's Ling Edward and Italian Pellielo Giovanni were placed at the second and third spot respectively with a score of 73 each.

 

Another Indian Olympic hopeful Jitu Rai, who was expected to make the final in the 10 metres air pistol, finished at a disappointing eighth.

 

Meanwhile, on Day 1 of the games, Indian women shooters Apurvi Chandela and Ayonika Paul failed to qualify in the 10 metres air rifle event.

 

Apurvi, a silver medallist in the World Cup, and the Commonwealth Games gold winner finished at 34 with a score of 411.6 while Ayonika ended at the 43rd place with a final score of 407.
