Perplexity AI’s Comet is an AI-driven browser designed to compete with Google Chrome.
Nvidia backed Perplexity AI announced on Wednesday the debut of Comet, a web browser infused with artificial intelligence-driven search features.
The company says Comet was created to meet the needs of modern internet users, who increasingly use the web not just to browse but to work, learn, and solve problems.
It aims to simplify workflows by merging search, analysis, and task execution into one assistant-driven experience.
However, on Stocktwits, retail sentiment toward Perplexity AI shifted to ‘extremely bearish’ territory from ‘neutral’ the previous day.
Comet allows users to ask questions conversationally while reading or working online. In response, the browser actively gathers, compares, and distills relevant information in real time.
This transition from passive web use to an interactive experience lets users work on ideas without juggling multiple tabs or switching between apps.
Comet represents Perplexity AI’s debut in the competitive browser space. As of June, StatCounter data shows Google Chrome leading the global browser market with a 68% share, far surpassing Safari, Microsoft Edge, and Firefox.
Comet's foundations are rooted in delivering fact-checked responses. The tool supports decision-making from tech comparisons to financial products.
User data remains local to the device as a way of protecting privacy and ensuring a personalized experience without contributing to model training.
Supported by major investors such as Nvidia, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, and SoftBank, Perplexity aims to position Comet as a competitor to leading browsers like Google Chrome and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) Edge.
Comet is currently open to Perplexity Max subscribers through an invite-only early access program. A broader rollout is planned over the coming months.
Perplexity’s valuation has reached $14 billion, highlighting a growing enthusiasm among investors for generative AI, a field that has gained considerable momentum with the emergence of platforms like ChatGPT.
