Mohanlal was close to former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who died recently. In various interviews, Mohanlal said the friendship began with his father. Mohanlal mourned the senior Congress leader. He called Oommen Chandy a humanitarian who helped people experiencing poverty. Malayalam actor Prithviraj Sukumaran also paid his respect on his Instagram story. Apart from him, Kunchacko Boban, a notable figure in the film industry, took to social media to share a heartfelt tribute to Oommen Chandy, acknowledging his popularity in Kerala politics and praising his selfless nature in both public and private life. The loss of this esteemed leader deeply impacts the people of Kerala, including Kunchacko Boban personally.

Mohanlal said on Facebook that Oommen left the earth having made numerous contributions to the nation. "Dear Oommen Chandy Sir, a beloved leader who always gave priority to the people, and a humanitarian who went out to listen and solve the problems of common people," Mohanlal wrote. He's always been my friend. He is long-sighted and strong-willed, and Kerala has always loved him. He left the world with great accomplishments and advancements. Painful condolences.”

Mohanlal's video conversation with Bengaluru-hospitalized Oommen Chandy was also reported. In April, Mohanlal phoned Oommen Chandy at HCG Hospital in Bengaluru to check on him. He first called, then video chatted. The 10-minute cordial talk covered Oommen Chandy's health and Mohanlal's forthcoming films. The actor also called the late politician during the epidemic, which went viral.

Oommen Chandy, 79, died of throat cancer complications in a Bengaluru private hospital on July 18. Kerala mourned him for two days.
