Death toll due to alcohol withdrawal symptoms may be higher than coronavirus?

Amid the coronavirus lockdown, the states are going dry without the sale of liquor. Many have been facing mental and physical trauma and are having suicidal tendencies. Dr Bhandary said these patients should be treated as soon as possible as death toll due to these symptoms can be higher than coronavirus.

Bengaluru: Amidst the 21-day lockdown to contain the spread of coronavirus, malls, eateries, markets and even liquor shops have been forced to shut down. The alcohol ban in Kerala seems to be killing more people than the virus itself in the state, which has one of India’s highest per capita liquor consumption. The state, like the rest of India, has been forced to go dry in the wake of the ongoing 21-day nationwide lockdown. Psychiatrist and social activist Dr PV Bhandary has explained the cause of mental trauma during sudden withdrawal of alcohol. He said many who drink on a daily basis are facing mental and physical torture due to the unavailabilty of liquor in the country. However, there is treatment for this and it's best time to quit alcohol.
