Asianet News has uncovered a racket that has seen a number of unassuming teenagers falling prey to an online recruiting scam. Many remain silent out of shame; some speak up, hoping for justice.

Two young boys, who hail from South Delhi, saw an advertisement online for male sex workers and applied. However, they soon found out that they were being taken for a ride. When they refused to toe the racketeers' line, the latter blackmailed them and extorted large sums of money.

The scamsters operate wantonly on social media. They have posted ads on social media platforms like Instagram, Telegram and Facebook and even on Google Search. The aspirants are promised money and the company of women.

The target group is 16 to 25-year-olds. Registration for the job of a male escort normally happens on payment of an initial fee.

The two South Delhi victims told Asianet News that they were asked to pay Rs 3000 as registration to join. They were told that they would have to offer their services to 10 women in a month. They were told that if the clients were happy with their service, they would receive a higher amount in their accounts.

After they paid the initial registration fee, a woman called them for the first round of talks and photoshoots, for which they had to shell out more. When the boys decided to back out, the scamsters threatened to inform their family and tried to extort money from them.

While one of the two youth paid up, the other decided to fight back. He ignored the extortion threats and approached the police.

These are just two instances of this large scale fraud. Reports of such rackets have emerged from other parts of the country in recent weeks.

Last week, the Mumbai Crime Branch arrested a 47-year-old man for cheating a businessman of Rs 32.69 lakh by offering a lead role to his daughter in a film.

The accused, identified as Apurva Davda, sent bulk messages about the requirement for child actors for a film. He took around Rs 32.69 lakh from a businessman on the pretext of offering the main role to his daughter. It turns out, Davda had allegedly cheated some 80 persons with the same modus operandi and made more than Rs 2 crore.
