Increasing concerns over the safety of Sabarimala is affecting the customary rituals held as part of Makaravilakku festival. Participants of 'Erumeli Petta Thullal', the customary procession held as part of the festival had a clash with police as the cops blocked the procession on the way to Erumeli.

Usually Petta Thullal, the chariot procession is conducted up to Manimala town, but this year participants decided to the extent it to Erumeli. However, police blocked the procession of Ambalapuzha team as they entered Erumeli citing security issues. "The blocked us and insulted team leader and members," a member of the procession said.
The issue began as the procession entered the town and began according to receptions. When the team reached Valiyambalam, a police team under the leadership of CI E P Reji blocked it, triggering a verbal clash between team members and Ayyappa Seva Sangham volunteers.
"We held the procession after informing concerned departments including police, Arun Ashok of Ambalapuzha team said. Following this Ambalapuzha team staged a sit-in protest. The procession was reinstated only after temple officials then came to the spot and pacified the team and senior police officials.
Meanwhile, police said they had informed the team that procession cannot be allowed to Erumeli owing to security reasons. He justified police action and said the members were allowed to go back after the senior officials intervened.
Petta Thullal is one of the most important events during Sabarimala pilgrimage. The ritualistic sacred dance is performed to celebrate the victory of good over evil in remembrance of Lord Ayyappa's victory over demoness Mahishi.
