Forget the bull, here is how political parties encash on Jallikattu

  • DMK’s call for state-wide protest against ban on Jallikattu received a massive response
  • Centre (BJP) and Congress too tried their best to show their support to Jallikattu
  • It looks like Jallikattu ban is considered as another chance to impress the vote banks
Forget the bull here is how political parties encashing on Jallikattu

Naam Tamilar Katchi (party) workers among other groups organise Jallikattu ahead of Pongal festival, despite Supreme Court’s ban on the sport. 28 people were arrested for conducting jallikattu at Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu.

Leaders including DMK’s working president MK Stalin took part in the protest in the state capital. Stars like Simbu (STR) and others also came on the streets and gave emotional speeches that Jallikattu should not be banned.

Meanwhile, the BJP in the Centre also tried to direct an ordinance to facilitate Tamilians to organise Jallikattu, but Supreme Court’s strict ‘no’ stopped it from being favourable to the people of Tamil Nadu. Of course, this step was being contemplated not because the BJP thinks Jallikattu is important for the Tamil, but it is one of their ways trying to make inroads into the state.

For AIADMK, before the final departure, Jayalalithaa has already made it sure that people support her party as she had pressed for the ordinance (to allow jallikattu) from the Centre after the Supreme Court upheld its verdict on the ban.

In fact, DMK during the protest rally on Friday had said that “It is a welcome move that students are holding protests in favour of Jallikattu. These students are guarding our mother tongue,” and tried to touch the emotional chord.

It is this statement of Stalin, which received great applause and gave a hint that come what may, Jallikattu will not stop and will not be allowed to stop in the state.

Stalin said, “I believe that students’ agitation will protect Jallikattu, the cultural symbol of Tamil people.”

The DMK has taken the centre stage and is blaming AIADMK for its inaction which did not take any measure regarding lifting the ban on Jallikattu.

The Congress is also accusing the AIADMK of not taking any action to save Jallikattu for Tamil Nadu.

All this for the love of Tamil culture or Jallikattu? It doesn't seem so...political parties love their chances of proving dearer to people more than anything.

This is how the political parties not only in the state but also in the Centre are trying to encash as much as they can from the Jallikattu ban.
