Gopichand says Sindhus win at quarters not her finest game

Indian Badminton national coach Pullela Gopichand wants PV Sindhu to improve her defensive skills before the crucial semi-final match at the Rio Olympics.

 

Sindhu conquered World No. 2 Yihan Wang at the quarter-final in the early hours of Wednesday. The Indian shuttler fought hard to seal the match at 22-20, 21-19 and has rated the win over the silver medallist of the London Games as one of the best moments of her career.

 

Although Gopichand believed Sindhu played really well and was all fired up against Wang, he has reckoned that she has the capability of a "higher" performance.

 

"Sindhu's win at the quarter-final in the Rio Games was good but in my book she can do a notch higher. There’s, of course, some chances of improvement in a couple of areas," Gopichand told PTI after Sindhu's stellar win.

 

The national coach nevertheless is being optimistic about Sindhu's semi-final clash against the World No. 3 Nozomi Okuhara. The match will be played on Thursday.

 

"She’s been inconsistent a few times and squandered leads but I think it’s part of her learning experience. She’s still young and has age on her side. I think she’s a great fighter with great work ethic," Gopichand added about the 21-year-old Shuttler.

 

The former Indian badminton player perceived that the battle between Sindhu and Wang was a close one where both players put up a high-spirited performance.
