In the midst of anger and outrage over a distressing video of two women sexually assaulted and paraded naked during ethnic clashes in Manipur, government agencies and security forces have reportedly intensified their scrutiny of all incidents in the state. According to a report in NDTV, following violent clashes that erupted on May 3rd, the agencies have heightened vigilance over digital platforms, particularly social media, where a surge in purported incidents in Manipur has been witnessed.

Over 6,000 cases have been reportedly filed so far, with most related to arson and damage to government property. The authorities have successfully debunked several potentially incendiary claims before they could escalate. "As we've heightened our monitoring efforts, we've been successful in debunking numerous potentially incendiary claims before they could escalate," said a senior official to NDTV.

With a particular emphasis on social media platforms, which have experienced an increase in false reports of incidents in Manipur, the strategy seeks to stop the dissemination of misinformation. Before taking any action, the footage is double-checked for validity. However, the ongoing resource crunch at local police stations has hampered the investigation of serious offenses like murder and assault.

In response to these challenges, the central government has reportedly dispatched 135 companies to assist the state police in maintaining law and order. Though the situation is reportedly improving, sporadic incidents continue to occur, and half of Manipur's 16 districts remain trouble-prone. To prevent complacency, the forces are periodically rotated.

The unrest in Manipur stems from violent clashes between the Kuki tribal group and the Meitei ethnic majority, resulting in at least 125 deaths and displacing over 40,000 people from their homes. A video depicting the appalling treatment of women triggered widespread protests and disruptions in Parliament, prompting the central government to deploy thousands of paramilitary and army troops to the region. Despite efforts, sporadic violence keeps the state on high alert.
