Eastern Railway is ready to resume local train services in Kolkata. As soon as a standard operating procedure with the state government evolves, the train services will be resumed.

According to reports, the train services will not be resumed during Durga puja but the state may take a decision soon after monitoring the COVID-19 situation after the festive season.

A senior Eastern Railway officer said, “The primary aim is to regulate footfall at suburban stations and control the number of people in each coach. Quicker dispersal at larger stations like Howrah and Sealdah will also have to be worked out to ensure physical distancing.”

“This is crucial for the safety of commuters during the pandemic. We have already urged the state to convene a meeting,” he added.

The Eastern Railway officials said that it will require a lot of assistance from the state in managing crowds at suburban stations. While the concept of e-passes may be adopted, entry points to stations will have to be carefully monitored.
