Google has introduced a new feature allowing users to change their Gmail username for the first time in 20 years without losing any data. Your old address becomes an alias, ensuring you still receive all emails, while you can use a new name.

Google has announced a huge move that will allow users to delete the cringe-worthy email addresses they made decades ago. For the first time in 20 years, anyone may modify the section of their Gmail address before the "@gmail.com" without losing any data.

Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google's parent firm Alphabet, quipped on social media that, while 2004 was a terrific year, your email address doesn't have to be locked in the past. He acknowledged that the new functionality is intended to let your account develop alongside you as your preferences change.

The upgrade lets you select a new, available username while retaining your full account history. This means that all of your previous images, texts, and files remain exactly where they are.

A brilliant feature of this upgrade is that your previous address does not simply disappear. It becomes a "alternative" address, so emails addressed to your former name will continue to arrive in your current inbox. You may also use either your old or new name to check in to services like YouTube, Maps, and Google Drive.

Things To Keep In Mind

• You can only alter your address every 12 months.
• The maximum number of modifications allowed in a lifetime is three.
• If you change your mind, you may always return to your original address.
• The new name must be unique and not already used by anybody else.
• Google recommends backing up your data before you begin, just to be safe. This functionality is now being rolled out to users in the United States.

How Does It Work?

If you're ready to switch from your old email address to something more professional, simply follow these steps to upgrade your account:

• Open your settings. Go to the Google Account Settings page on your computer or mobile device.

Find your information: Look for the tab entitled Personal information and click it.

• Go into your email settings: Scroll down to the Contact details area, click Email, and then choose Google Account email.
• Check for an update: If the functionality is enabled for your account, you will see the option "Change Google Account Email". To proceed, simply click this.
• Choose a new name: Enter the new username you wish to use. Remember that it must be unique and not a name previously used by someone else.
• Confirm and Save: Follow the final prompts to confirm the change. To be safe, Google suggests backing up your data before proceeding with this step.

After you've finished, you may log in with either your old or new address, and all of your emails will continue to come in the same spot.
