Why do pillows turn yellow even after regular washing? Sweat, body oils and moisture can cause stubborn stains. Discover easy DIY cleaning hacks to refresh yellow pillows and make them look clean and new again.
Pillow Cleaning
To stay healthy, it's not enough for us to be clean; our surroundings must be clean too. That's why everyone regularly cleans their bedsheets and pillows. But no matter how clean the cover is, the pillow inside often turns a yucky yellow or brown. Seeing this, many people just toss them out. But let's check out how you can make them look new again without spending much, using things you already have at home.

Why do pillows turn yellow?
When we sleep, our body naturally releases sweat. This, along with oils from our skin and hair, seeps through the pillow cover and gets absorbed by the filling. On top of that, face creams, lotions, wet hair, and even drool contribute to these yellow stains over time. This moisture also traps dust and bacteria, causing a bad smell.
2 Easy Methods to Remove These Yellow Stains
1. Baking Soda + Vinegar Trick: First, mix equal parts of baking soda and water to make a paste. Apply this paste on the yellow stains and leave it for 30 minutes. After that, sprinkle a little white vinegar on it and wash it in the washing machine. The stains will vanish! (Note: If you have a memory foam or latex pillow, don't wash it. Just wipe it gently with a damp cloth and let it air dry in the sun).
2. Lemon Juice + Sunlight (A Natural Bleach): Mix one part lemon juice with two parts warm water (or white vinegar) in a spray bottle. Spray this mixture on the pillow and leave it in direct sunlight for a few hours. The sun's UV rays act as a natural bleach, completely removing stains and odours.
Tips to Prevent Yellowing: Always use a waterproof pillow protector under your regular pillow cover. This stops sweat and oils from seeping in. Also, make it a habit to wash your pillow covers once a week and the inner pillows every 3 to 6 months. For hygiene, it's best to replace your old pillows with new ones every 2 years.
