Malayalam actress Surabhi Lakshmi, who won the 2017 National Award for best actress for her performance in 'Minnaminugu - The Firefly', said she had no idea that she was also in the running for the prestigious honour.

"Every actor or actress dreams of winning the big awards. So of course, I wanted to win, it would be a lie to say I didn't. But truth be told, I never ever expected to win the National Award. I was hoping for a special jury mention at best," the actress said over the phone from Salalah.

Surabhi was flying to Oman for a stage show when the National Awards where announced. It was only when she landed at the Salalah international airport that she came to know about her award.

"I came to know about it only when the people received me with a bouquet at the airport. It took me five minutes to process it. I feel bad that I am not home. If I had any idea that I had a chance, I would have stayed back," the actress added.

Written by Manoj Ramsingh and directed by Anil Thomas, Minnaminugu tells the story of a widow in her forties.

"Ours was a little film which was shot in 10-15 days. I want to thank Manoj, Anil, Ouseppachan sir and everyone associated with the film."
