With tears in her eyes, Mimi (Kriti Sanon) holds her baby for the first time; as the tiny one wraps his finger around hers, she takes a sigh of relief, visualising her whole future in that intimate moment. Mimi is a story about a young girl from Bikaner, whose eyes are filled with dreams to become an actress. But she gets caught in a whirlpool of emotions, struggles, and significant life changes as she finds herself trapped in emotional circumstances with a 'life' developing inside her. At the same time, she has nowhere to go.
Mimi narrates the story of an aspiring actress played by Kriti Sanon, who agrees to become a surrogate for a foreign couple for Rs 20 lakhs to fulfil her dream to step into the glam world of Bollywood. Mimi in a quest to become an actress makes foolish choices to earn money without thinking of the surrounding circumstances, that brings her to a happy yet life-changing ending.
Mimi is one of such great films that brings the taboos surrounding surrogacy in India to the centre stage. Mimi is exceptionally well-crafted. The direction, music, dialogues, and character's lingos are perfect 'Bikaneri', raw, and honest.
Take a bow; Kriti Sanon has taken rebirth as an actor, Mimi will undoubtedly prove a game-changer for her as she aced the part of surrogate mother beautifully, communicating with her eyes in the most subtle manner.
The supporting character's of the film Sai Tamhankar who plays Shama, and Pankaj Tripathi, who plays Bhanu, act as strong support throughout Mimi's surrogate pregnancy. Manoj Pahwa and Supriya Pathak, who play Mimi's parents, gave satisfactory performances. It would be safe to say that Tripathi's acting does not let this ship sink.
A big cloud of pain and sadness bursts on Mimi when the foreign couple refuses to accept the baby, after learning about the deformities in the unborn child, leaving Mimi depressed, as she sees her dream of becoming an actress fade away.
Mimi instead proves to be a wonderful mother who takes charge of her life, gives birth to her baby, nurtures him, and names him after her most-loved Bollywood character. But what happens to the foreign couple? Do they come back in Mimi's life? Well, we will leave this twist for the audience to watch.
The original song and background score for Mimi is composed by AR Rahman, 'Rihaayi De' will make your eyes teary as you see Mimi walking alone on the path of becoming a surrogate mother. All lyrics are written by Amitabh Bhattacharya.
The film also has some hilarious scenes, and if old-town melodrama interests you, you should give it a watch. The movie is currently streaming on Netflix
