YSR dream of Hyderabad Metro Rail Project has become a reality

The prestigious Hyderabad Metro Rail had its grand opening on Tuesday afternoon through the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The facility will be opened to public from Wednesday.

Though Telangana Rashtra Samithi, Telugu Desam Party and Congress were vying with each other to take credit for this landmark in history but people attribute the real credit to departed CM YS Rajasekhar Reddy.

When we look at the history of Andhra Pradesh before bifurcation, the graph shows YSR went on a development spree after he took responsibility as CM in 2004. He also took up prestigious projects for the development of Hyderabad out of which Outer Ring Road, Information Technology Investment Region and Metro Rail are prominent.

The increase in traffic in Hyderabad prompted him to foresee the future and he laid the foundation to the Metro Rail project on the lines of Delhi Metro. YSR invited officials of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation who visited the city between 2005 and 2007 and formulated a Detailed Project Report.

In the first phase of the DPR, 73 kms in three corridors was formulated – LB Nagar – Miyapur (29 kms), JBS – Falaknuma (15 kms) and Nagole – Rayadurgam (29 kms) was formulated.

YSR succeeded in getting the required permissions and grants from Central government and wanted this project to be a platform for new trends. So this project was started as a private-public undertaking. He laid the foundation to the Metro Rail project in 2008.

Initially, the private company Maytas Metro was given the contract for the project but with its mother company Satyam Computers embroiled in scandal, YSR cancelled the project contract in 2009. YSR government invited for global tenders of which L&T succeeded in getting the contract for the project and rest is history.
