EC suspends police officer in charge of Mamata Banerjee's security; removes DM

The Election Commission took action after examining the investigation report into the incident of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee being injured during the election campaign in Nandigram. The commission removed Director Security Vivek Sahay and East Medinipur's Superintendent of Police Pravin Prakash after finding negligence in the incident.

In a directive on Sunday, East Midnapore Superintendent of Police Praveen Prakash, District Magistrate Bivu Goel has been transferred and the commission has suspended Chief Minister's security officer Vivek Sahayak. The commissioner said more stringent measures would be taken against them.

The election body also directed the West Bengal Chief Secretary to find out within three days other officers in charge of the Chief Minister's security who faulted in their duties and take action against them.

The commission has admitted that there was a lack of security in the incident where the Chief Minister was injured in Nandigram. The commission is dissatisfied with how so many people came together to the chief minister despite the security of the Z-plus security.

According to commission sources, the commission may take disciplinary action against the three sacked officials and several others.

The commission has posted IAS officer Smita Pandey as DM and DEO, East Medinipur in place of Vibhu Goel who has been transferred to a non-election post.
