- WhatsApp is among the most popular messaging platform in India.
- Uber has received good response from tier-2 cities for its 'Dial an Uber'.
According to a report in The Economic Times, Uber is experimenting with ways to book a cab without the need for an app, such as SMS, social media and even via messaging platforms like WhatsApp. Considering WhatsApp is among the most popular messaging platform in India, the move could make sense for the Indian market. The report adds that Uber has received good response from tier-2 cities for its 'Dial an Uber' service, owing to limited network and entry-level phones.
Uber's head of engineering Apurva Dalal told ET that in emerging markets like India, the app isn't the only way to book a cab, considering other customer segments such as elderly citizens that may prefer easier options. In its current experiment, the aggregator is looking at these options depending upon customers and also regions with poor connectivity. It is also looking at how the app can work on entry-level phones.
According to the report, cash payments, and call centre for drivers are some India-specific experiments that have worked in other markets too. However, Uber still doesn't have a call centre for riders, and is known to flash standard responses when responding to complaints, much to the rider's annoyance.
