There has been no update from Facebook with regard to the outage. However, Mark Zuckerberg's firm did acknowledge that something had gone wrong and that they were trying to fix it.

According to Down Detector, the outage happened around 9 pm IST.

WhatsApp, meanwhile, said that it was aware that users had been experiencing issues with the service at the moment.

The platform said that efforts were on to get things back to normal.

The outage saw many users rush to micro-blogging site Twitter for updates and to post memes to express their anguish at not being able to access the social platforms.
