Airtel’s new ad: A mockery of its own network?

Airtel's new ad begins with a woman saying that there is hardly any difference in the cellular networks across India - 'All of them offer equally bad networks'.

However, in the commercial Airtel claims, "We have nothing to hide," and that’s the reason the company has become India’s first 'open network'.

This open network, which is visible through Airtel's website, will allow the users to see nearby Airtel towers and select the tower that is closest to them, to have better connectivity.

Ironically, even after becoming the 'first-ever open network of the country', the company is not able to address the issue of call drops.

Call drops in Airtel remain as dangerous as they were a few months ago, even after the company claimed that it was working on the issue. Airtel also claimed it would donate up to ₹100 crore for the education of underprivileged children - if it failed to bring the issue under control.

Airtel has already invested ₹60,000 crore in 'Project Leap', to improve their network quality. But, all their efforts seem to be in vain as the call drop issue has not been sorted yet.

Gopal Vittal, MD & CEO (India and South Asia), Bharti Airtel, said, "Open Network is a paradigm shift in the way we engage with our customers. With this initiative, we are establishing complete transparency with regards to our mobile network and opening ourselves to customer scrutiny and feedback,” mentioned a Tech 2 report.
