The Yoga Federation of India (YFI) has recommended spiritual guru Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh for Dronacharya Award, the country’s most prestigious award conferred upon coaches.

The Dera Sacha Sauda chief, who is famous for his hilarious film Messenger Of God, was nominated by YFI by an application submitted to the sports ministry on the last date of submission, May 28.

According to a report by The Indian Express, YFI president Ashok Kumar Agarwal said Singh’s trainees Neelam and Karamdeep won medals at the World and Asian Cups last year, which made him eligible for the award.

Singh has also been recommended for the Lifetime Achievement Award, given to two coaches who have produced ‘outstanding sportspersons’ over a period of 20 years.

As per the ministry’s policy, nominations for the award are accepted from ‘National Sports Federations recognised by the Government of India, Indian Olympic Association, Sports Promotion and Control Boards and State/UT Governments. The Yoga Federation of India claims to be recognised by the Indian Olympic Association.

Ram Rahim, by his own admittance, is a director, actor, lyricist, singer, composer, social reformer apart from being a spiritual guru. His nomination has left everyone guessing as to what the YFI was thinking at the time of filing the application.
