Indian workers' woes multiply: Spurt in complaints of labourers in Oman

Spurt in complaints of Indian labourers in Oman


The complaints filed by Indian workers in Oman recorded an increase of over 127 per cent in 2016 when compared to the previous year. The spurt in the complaints, most of them related to non-payment of salary, is considered as a reflection of the problems persisting in the economy following a slump in the oil prices. 

 

The Labour and Social Welfare section in the Indian Embassy in Muscat received 2195 complaints in 2016. In 2015, the number of complaints was 969.

Replying to a query under RTI, the Indian Embassy in Oman informed that it managed to solve 1,673 complaints while 181 complaints were under consideration of courts in the country. The employers and labourers reached an agreement in 341 cases. Most of the complaints were related to nonpayment or delay in paying salary. 

 

Asianet News had brought to light the plight of Indian labourers who got stranded in  Khaburah in Oman without salary for long. The Indian Embassy had intervened to solve the problem and took steps to give them salary dues.
