The Kottayam police have found themselves in hot water after a controversial photograph of a DYFI activist, arrested on charges of beating up BJP workers, started circulating on social media platforms on Monday.

In the selfie, Kumarakom DYFI area secretary Thyparampil Mithun, nabbed from Kumarakom on Sunday for manhandling BJP activists, can be seen at a police station wearing a sub inspector's cap.
BJP district president N Hari shared the photo initially on social media, claiming the accused sent it to his friends from the police station. He also alleged that the photograph showed the attitude of the police towards CPM and DYFI leaders.
The photo was then shared widely by social media users. BJP's Kottayam unit then lodged a complaint with the SP demanding a probe into the incident. An investigation has been ordered into the incident and the DySP has been given charge of it.
Meanwhile, the police have dismissed all allegations and insisted that the photo must have been taken from some other police station on a previous date.
