Renowned Malayalam screenwriter Iqbal Kuttipuram has come out in support of actor Dileep, who has been jailed on charges of conspiracy in the Kochi actress attack case.

Kuttipuram, who said he has been off Facebook for around a year, put up a post on Tuesday, criticising the way news channels and social media users have been treating Dileep.

Several persons from the film industry including veteran director Adoor Gopalakrishnan and prominent filmmaker G Suresh Kumar, had spoken out in support of actor Dileep in recent days.

Here's Iqbal's Facebook post's translation:

When Dileep was arrested even I was shocked, like everyone else. I wanted him to be punished if he had committed the crime he has been accused of.

However, the way he is being harassed and tortured in jail, even after investigation and evidence collection is long over, is very painful.

Dileep is not Pulsar Suni, Mohammed Nisham, Govindachamy or Ameer ul-Islam. He is a brother, son or a friend who won our hearts. This emotion is what the news channels sold to get their TRP ratings.

If Dileep is found guilty, let him get the maximum punishment. But if he is not, history won't forgive us for how we are torturing him.

Dileep was arrested on charges of conspiracy in the case on July 10 and has been lodged in the Aluva sub-jail ever since. Both Angamaly court and Kerala High Court denied him bail last month
