Kudala Sangama seer's remarks spark widespread protest

Veerashaivas protest against Kudalasangama Swamy for his remarks

The Kudala Sangama Mutt seer Basavajaya Mruthyunjaya has come under strong criticism from seers of various mutts, Veerashaiva Lingayat organisations for his remarks against Veerashaiavas at the Hubballi convention of the Lingayats, reports Kannada Prabha.

The seer has tendered an apology that his statement was misunderstood. But his apology too has not got down well with the protesters. There were severe protests in Hubballi, Bagalakot, Navalgunda and Shahapura against the seer. The protesters are now demanding that the seer must step down from the Peetha.

In Shahapur Nagar in Yadagir, the angry protesters even slapped his photos with shoes and burnt his effigy. Religious leaders like Billamkondi Hiremutt Nijagunadevaru, Phakeereshwara Mutt Gurupada swamy and other leaders participated in the protest. At Bagalakot, members of Veerashaiva Lingayat Samanvaya Samiti staged a protest in which Guledagudda Amareshwara mutt Neelakantha Shivacharya Sree, Gangavathi Kottur Kalmatha Dr Kottur Sree participated.

At Navalagund in Dharawad district Veerashaiva Lingayata Samja members protested and took out a procession to the police station and filed a complaint. In Hubballi, Veerashaiva Lingayat leaders staged a procession and filed a complaint at the Shahapur police station. The Veerashaiava Sanghatana Samiti held a meeting at the Mini Vidhana Soudha and urged that Kudala Sangama seer must be arrested and deported. At Sulya Panchagruha Hiremutt Seer, Channayya Basayya Chouki mutt, Basavaraja Sullada, Umesh Hirehal, Shivananda Kundagola, Manju Hadimani, Shivananda Hakari, Mahantesha Girimutt and others participated in the protest.

A case has been registered at Gandhi Chouk police station at VIjayapur too by Chandrakantha Hiremutt, a prominent Veerashaiva leader. Davanagere Veerashaiva Lingayat Panchamasali Samaja district unit also has condemned Swamy’s remarks. The district president of the Samaja Umapathi said at a press meet that the self-declared Jagadguru Jaya Mruthyunjaya Swamy’s statement about the origin of the birth of a man is disgusting and the Samaja strongly condemns it.
