Several nursing colleges face closure threat

A State Government order issued in 2016 has turned out to be a threat for closure of nursing colleges in the State.  The future of candidates who have passed out of these colleges is bleak as they are disqualified for appointment at other states and abroad, reports Kannada Prabha.

The State Government had issued an order in 2016 that recognition by Rajiv Gandhi Health Sciences University was sufficient for nursing colleges and that there was no need for getting affiliation to Indian Nursing Council. Following this INC had withdrawn the recognition granted to over 300 nursing colleges in the State.  However, it has come to light that those candidates who do not have the certificate from colleges recognised by INC are not eligible for appointment out of State or abroad.  All of them have to compulsorily work within the State.

Alos the banks do not sanction education loan for higher studies for those who are studying at colleges not recognised by INC.  As a result all students who had submitted their applications, along with original certificates, are demanding that the administration cancel their applications and return their marks cards.  Interestingly 90 per cent of the applicants into nursing colleges in the State are outsiders. Majority of them are from Kerala.  Cancellation of admissions will result in closure of colleges, fear the administrations.

In view of the hardship faced by nursing students in the State, former chief minister of Kerala, Oommen Chandy has appealed to the State Government to withdraw the said order. He has urged State Congress in charge K C Venugopal, Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil to withdraw the order.  It is learnt that the minister has assured him action in this regard, reported Kannada Prabha.
