North K'taka bears brunt of state apathy, over Rs 1000 crore in funds sits idle

  • In a shocking sign of state apathy, around Rs 1005 crore, sanctioned for development of North Karnataka, lies unused
  • Not just funds, more than 50,000 posts lie vacant, without any efforts to fill them. Only 3,000 posts have been filled so far.
  • The total subsidy announced by the government is Rs 4,650 crore, of which only Rs 1,475 crore was utilised
North Karnataka at the receiving end Over Rs 1000 cr subsidy unused

The lack of willingness on the part of both the state government and the people's representatives to take up developmental activities in the north Karnataka region has resulted in as much as Rs 1005 crore sanctioned lying unused in the State Treasury.

There is also a disinterest in filling up thousands of posts (50,000 to be precise) essential to plan and execute developmental projects. All of this continues to deprive the region earlier known as the Hyderabad-Karnataka region. The primary aim of the Hyderabad-Karnataka Region Development Board, instituted in 2013 with a special status, was to take the region on the developmental path. However, an absolute lack of interest on the part of the people’s representatives has reduced the Board to uselessness.

The state had allocated a budget of Rs 4,250 crore for development of the HK region. Later, another Rs 400 crore was approved in the Kalburgi Assembly session. A total of Rs 4,650 crore was at the disposal of the board. Of this, Rs 2,480 crore was released. Out that released amount, Rs 1,005 crore lies unused. Hence the state government is withholding the release of the remaining Rs 2,570 crore.

This appears to be the prime reason why the HK region lags behind in implementing developmental projects. The board that covers Bidar, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Ballari, Koppal, and Yadagir districts is now defunct.

MLA Amarnath Patil has said that efforts are on to fill up the posts. The government has failed to provide figures with regard to the funds released and expenses incurred. Hence, the Governor has been requested to order an audit, he said, reported Kannada Prabha.
