Locals take BBMP to High Court for cutting trees for Indira Canteen

Until now, the construction of Indira Canteen at parks, playgrounds, temple lands were being protested but now the locals have filed a case in the High Court questioning the construction of Indira canteen at Rajajinagar.

Geetha Mishra and four others have filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) at the High Court of Karnataka questioning felling of trees at the BDA land at Rajajinagar 3rd block for construction of Indira Canteen. They are questioning the necessity of constructing the canteen by cutting down trees, reports Kannada Prabha. A divisional bench headed by Chief Justice SK Mukherjee and justice PS Dinesh heard the case on Monday and issued orders to BBMP Commissioner, BBMP Forest Officer, BDA Commissioner and KPTCL Managing Director.

Arguing for the applicants, advocate GR Mohan stated that 23.14 acres of land belonging to BDA at Rajajinagar 3rd block was sanctioned to KEB in 1949 by the then Trust Board. Of this, six acres and one Gunta land was identified as additional land, which is vacant since 60 years. Thousands of trees have grown here naturally, becoming a forest area. The BDA has not taken back this additional land from KEB, currently with the KPTCL. Now, the BBMP is cutting down trees here to construct Indira Canteen. The advocate argued that directions must be given to KPTCL and BBMP that no civil constructions should be take up on this 6.1 acre land and it should be returned to BDA, reports Kannada Prabha.
