Kalaburagi Central Prison turns into a war-zone after jail inmates attack warders

FollowA surprise check in Kalaburagi Central Prison turned violent on Tuesday, July 25, after six undertrials held in the prison attacked warders with stones.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning when warder Vasant Sulfi and his team conducted a surprise check at Barrack 1 based on a tip-off that inmates were using smart phones.
He found inmate Satish Reddy using a cellphone. When he tried to snatch the phone away, he and his team were attacked by Satish along with Umesh, Tankya, Babu, Gangappa and Sagar.
The inmates threw stones and beat the warders. Other prisoners also started pelting stones at the other staff. But the situation was brought under control. Deccan Herald reported that In-charge Superintendent of the prisons, Bhagawantraya Mali Patil, lodged a case against the six inmates at the Farhatabad police station. Satish, who has shifted here from Ballari prison only two days ago, has been moved to Hindalga prison in Belagavi.
The jail superintendent has sought permission from his superiors to move the other five inmates.
Inspector General of Police (Northeastern range) Alok Kumar told reporters that a team of policemen comprising 5 DySPs, 12 inspectors, 22 PSIs and 200 constables was rushed to the prison to support the jail staff.
Police seized knives, scissors, ten ganja packets, four chillums, five cellphones and Rs 1.2 lakh in cash from the raids conducting in the 19 barracks of the central prison.
Alok Kumar further said that the jail has 839 inmates, many of them notorious criminals, and only 92 prison staff.
