Are people really loving the food at Indira Canteen?

Indira Canteen a roaring success

The Indira Canteen started by the State Government for the poor has attracted people of all classes resulting in food disappearing off the counter within minutes, reported Kannada Prabha.

The purpose of starting Indira Canteen was to feed the labourers and poor who come from outside the City. But the curiosity it generated attracted all classes of people and the rich arrived in cars and bikes to eat at the canteen.  The food got over within minutes and thousands were left disappointed. The main complaint received was that the quantity was very less.  May were seen fighting with the staff asking if they brought it from their homes.

Everybody who ate at the canteen have praised the quality and taste of the food. If the same quality is maintained it will be a huge success they said. Everybody wanted to take selfie with the food and upload on the social network. The Indira Canteen app is also very popular with over 1000 downloads in one day.

BBMP Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad did a tour of several wards and said the response was bigger than expected. In Radhakrishna Temple ward canteen the lunch was served at 2 pm instead of 12.30 pm.  It had been decided to use melamine and steel plates at the canteen. Each canteen was provided with 300 plates, totalling 30,300 plates for 101 canteens. The Mumbai wholesale dealer was convinced to sell plates of Rs 240 for a  social cause at Rs 130. 20,000 plates have arrived and further 10,000 plates are expected. In some canteens as a temporary measure arecanut sheet plates were used.

Food and Civil Supply Minister U T Khader told BBMP commissioner N Manjunath Prasad to introduce coffee and tea also as the response by the public is very good.  Not only pulao and chitranna made by rice but also eatables made with millets will be good for health suggested Minister Krishna Byregowda.

In some canteens auto drivers were very happy with the arrangements and the food.  In fact they suggested providing Smart Card instead of tokens, which will avoid standing in queue. The Commissioner asked them to upload the suggestions on the app.  

In view of unexpected crowd and the eatables going short supply BBMP commissioner Manjunath Prasad had requested Police Commissioner to provide police service and all canteens had  police protection.  Manjunatha Prasad also said that presently people are coming out of curiosity. After a week there will be stabilisation and only after that the quantity of food can be determined. A photograph clicked by the Commissioner of an old man sitting with his granddaughter eating went viral.
