In less than 6 months, three more naxalites surrender in Chikmagaluru
- They surrendered in the presence of DC and SP
- Senior journalist Gowri Lankesh and advocate AK Subbaiab were present
- Of the surrendered, Kanyakumari and Shivakumar are a couple
FollowThree naxals of which two women have surrendered themselves before the deputy commissioner in Chikmagaluru on Monday. This is the second time that the Naxalites - in less than a year - have come forward to join the mainstream society laying down their weapons.
On Monday, Kanyakumari, Chennamma and Shivu surrendered before Chikmagaluru deputy commissioner DS Satyavathi and Superintendent of Police Annamalai. They were led by journalist Gowri Lankesh and AK Subbaiah and Shantigagi Nagarika Vedike members.
Kanyakumari has 33 cases registered against her which includes, murder, sedition, dacoity. Shivakumar is her husband. Another extremist Chennamma has three cases registered against her.
It may be recalled here that in November 2016, two naxal couples had surrendered themselves in Chikamagalur. They were Neelguli Padmanabh alias Nemi Achar and his wife Bharathi and Rizwana Begum alias Kalpana and her husband Raju alias Parashurama. Padmanabh, a native of Koppa, was quite a prominent face in the naxal movement as he had been involved himself in the movement for the last 14 years. At the police encounter in 1999, he was wounded at Barkana, reports The New Indian Express. His leg had to be amputated after it become gangrenous.
It is said that after the state government modified the naxal rehabilitation package, it has helped many of them to join the mainstream society. Two years ago, the State government had increased compensation for naxals who surrendered before the government.
Under the new modified surrender package, naxals who will surrender weapons like AK 47, AK 56s or AK 74 guns will get Rs 30,000 as compensation as against the earlier package of Rs 15,000. Besides, the surrender of machine guns will make them eligible for Rs 50,000 compensation. Those who will surrender pistols will get Rs 10,000 from mere Rs 3,000 package, reports The Indian Express.
Freedom fighter HS Doreswamy, senior advocate AK Subbaiah and senior journalist Gowri Lankesh are in the state level committee that has modified the rehabilitation and compensation package.
