Highway bandh on Aug 9 by farmers protesting against State and Central Governments

The State farmers who are suffering from continuous 3 years of drought have decided to protest against the State and Central Government pressing for various demands. They are staging a Highway Bandh on August 9, closing down all State and National Highways in the State, reported Kannada Prabha.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the State Sugarcane Growers Association on Tuesday, attended by all prominent leaders of the farmers. The demands include implementation of Dr Swaminathan Report, farm loan waiver, release of water from dams into canals, interest free loans to manage drought.

Speaking to newspersons after the meeting, president of State Sugarcane Growers Association Kuruburu Shanthakumar said at a meeting of major farmers federations of the country, held recently at Haryana, it was decided to stage a highway bandh all over the country on Aug 9, demanding various issues of farming sector, to draw the attention of various state and the Central government.

Hence the State farmers are also joining the strike pressing for their demands, he said.
