The Health Department of Karnataka has taken the disparity in the ratio between girls and boys seriously. To prevent Female foeticide, it has announced an award of Rs 50,000 in cash to the people who inform the department about the centres identifying the sex of the foetus.

Last year, the Health Department had asked the pregnant women to give information about the Ultra-scanning centres which identify the sex of the fetus. But this programme was not successful as no one came forward to give the information.

Thus to woo the ‘informers’, the Department has planned to involve money and expects some leads in this regard. The department has asked the people to give any information about the scanning centres running without registration, middlemen and relatives forcing the pregnant to conduct the tests.

Reports in One India have said that sex determination test is done in centres situated in North Karnataka and abortions are done in Maharashtra. Recently, 17 fetuses were found on the roadside in Sangli.
