A Bengaluru-based man has accused healthcare giant Fortis Hospital of allegedly ‘murdering’ his mother in Facebook. He also claims that they extorted money from him in the name of hospital bill and medicine fees.

Abhinav Verma said that he admitted his mother to Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta, on May 13, 2017, for a small 5mm gallbladder stone. He says that she was fine and did not have any pain until that day. He stated that the hospital tested his mother for WBC, RBC, haemoglobin, platelets, bilirubin, creatinine and ruled that all were normal. Her lungs, heart, kidney, liver and pancreas all the vital organs were working perfectly fine.

On May 13, 2017, Dr Shabber Ahmad, was supposed to do the Stone Surgery. He asked them to get an ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-Pancreatography) done to rule out any symptoms of cancer. Dr Ahmad allegedly asked Dr Pooranchandra KS to perform the ERCP. The Biopsy report later confirmed that there were no signs of cancer.

However, post the ERCP tests, Abhinav says that his mother was in severe pain because Dr Pooranchandra touched the pancreas which resulted in Acute Severe Pancreatitis. “She was continuously saying that she has pain in the stomach, but since it was a Saturday, the doctor left the hospital. Junior Doctors were just giving her painkillers. They kept her in the ward for three days before moving her to the ICU when her BP started falling,” he said.

They moved her to ICU on May 16, 2017, saying they wanted to monitor her for the next 24hrs because they did not have the necessary equipment in the ward.

Abhinav says that post ERCP all the vital organs started failing. “They asked us to put pacemaker because after ERCP her heart’s rhythm was fluctuating. We agreed because we want her back. She never had a heart problem before.”

Abhinav alleges that in several medical reports, his mother’s gender was mentioned as ‘Male’. He says that the doctors brushed it off as just a clerical mistake. He also alleges that they stopped tracheotomy (a type of surgery for oxygen supply) because some outstanding amount was pending and resumed it only after the amount was paid.

Abhinav’s mother was also got infected with the MDR (Multi Drug Resistant) bacteria Klebsiella.

“The worst part is that they did all kind of surgery except that surgery for which she went to the hospital. In one of the report they said there is no stone in the gall bladder,” said Abhinav.

Abhinav’s mother succumbed to her complications on July 3, 2017. Abhinav alleges that even on the last day they took consent to perform dialysis to remove acid from the body.

He has alleged that the hospital tried to extort money out of him. He says that the hospital called bouncers into the ICU on the last day. They allegedly charged Rs 43 lakh as hospital bill and an additional Rs 12 lakh for medicines, which is exorbitant.

Abhinav has also alleged that there is CCTV footage of doctors and staff of the hospital laughing after one patient died in the ICU on July 2, 2017.

Abhinav has called his mother’s death a murder by the hospital.
