Belagavi airport will be named after Kittur Rani Chennamma if State requests

The Union Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapatiraju suggested that if the State Government submit a proposal seeing to name Belagavi airport after Kittur Rani Chennamma it will be approved, reported Kannada Prabha.

He was speaking on the occasion of dedicating the upgraded Belagavi airport on Thursday. He said if the Cabinet approves and submits the proposal to the Aviation Ministry the name of Kittur Rani Chennamma would be approved.  He said it would help carry the history forward to the next generation.

The Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said small airports are being built within 150 km in the State and work has already started at Shimoga, Vijayapura, Hassan and Kalburgi. The State is willing to give all support for train and flight commuting developments.  Karnataka is highest in using air travel. In 2016-17, 98,574 passengers took the flights, he said.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister did not miss the chance to chide Union Minister Ananathakumar and MP Suresh Angadi.  Anantha Kumar in his speech had said that ever since Modi took over as the Prime Minister, air travel, earlier 6cr people used to travel by air in the last 3 years it has increased to 10 crores he said.

MP Suresh Angadi said earlier only rich used to travel by air but Modi dreams of even chappal wearing commoner should travel by air. It will be fulfilled in coming days, he said.

Responding to both the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the State Government has given 50 percent of the project cost. For all Centre’s projects 50 percent is borne by the State. Why the BJP only mentions Modi and not mention the State? Who gave the land and basic facilities for the airport and railways, he asked. Of the country’s total 130 crore population only 8 percent take air travel. It is being dreamt that commoners wearing Havai chappal should also fly. One can dream but it should be realisable dream.
