A tenant in Bengaluru's Koramangala, paying a rent of Rs 35,000 for a small studio, was allegedly verbally abused by their landlord for using the air conditioner. The incident, which occurred in a poorly ventilated flat where electricity was included in the rent, went viral on Reddit, sparking a wider discussion about the city's rental market.
Paying a high rent is supposed to bring comfort, convenience and peace of mind. However, it allegedly caused disputes, insults, and irritation for one renter from Bengaluru. A Koramangala resident's Reddit post went viral when he said his landlord mistreated him for using the air conditioner excessively in a tiny studio flat with little airflow. Many individuals on the internet have responded favourably to the post, particularly those who have relocated to Bengaluru for employment and found it difficult to cope with the costly rental market.

In a post titled "My Landlord abused me," the Reddit member described his experience. The renter claims that he has been paying Rs 35,000 a month for a Koramangala studio unit. The property is said to have very little ventilation and no balcony, despite the expensive rent.
“I’ve been paying 35k for a studio apartment in Koramangala. It is very small, without a balcony and with hardly any ventilation. I agreed for it because I had just moved to Bangalore and didn’t know much about the city. The flat is fully furnished and came with an AC and everything was included in the rent, electricity and water bill too,” the user wrote.
At first, the arrangement seemed convenient. For someone who was new to Bengaluru, a furnished flat with bills included and a location near the city's bustling job centers seemed like a good setting. However, when the landlord objected to the tenant's use of air conditioning, everything changed.
According to the tenant, the landlord accused him of abusing the electrical arrangement and abusing the air conditioner. The post claims that the discussion quickly became hostile.
The user further explained, “But turns out, ‘I’m misusing the fact that electricity is free for me and using AC too much.’ Not just that, I got called, ‘stupid’ and an ‘idiot’ for behaving like this. Of course, with zero ventilation, I didn’t really have any other option but to use AC as long as I stay in that flat.”
Additionally, the user noted that since the cost of the power was already included in the monthly rent, it was not truly "free." The message continued, "Aside from that, I wish I could tell that abuser that the electricity is NOT free and I'm in fact paying way too much for a flat like that."

"The landlords are such a huge part of bad experiences in a new city," one user said.
