Residents across several Bengaluru neighbourhoods are alarmed by a shoe thief who targets branded footwear left outside homes. The thefts, mostly around 3 am, have been captured on CCTV cameras, prompting police investigation.
Bengaluru has witnessed several instances of theft involving mobile phones, gold jewellery and other valuables. However, residents are now grappling with an unusual menace in the form of a thief who targets only branded footwear. Over the past few weeks, a series of shoe thefts has been reported from several neighbourhoods, causing concern among residents. The activities of this so-called “shoe thief” have been reported from areas including Jnanabharathi, Annapurneshwari Nagar and surrounding localities.

Thief in Monkey Cap Jumps Compound Walls
The modus operandi of the thief has left residents alarmed. Described as an elderly man, the suspect reportedly jumps over compound walls of houses and apartment complexes at night to gain entry. Wearing a face mask and a monkey cap, he specifically targets expensive and branded shoes kept outside homes before fleeing the scene.
Enters Exactly at 3 am
Police sources said the thief has deliberately chosen the early morning hours when residents are in deep sleep. His activities usually begin around 3 am. CCTV footage shows him quietly approaching apartment staircases, swiftly filling a bag with footwear, and leaving the premises without raising suspicion.
Shoe Thief’s Menace Spreads to Outlying Areas
The incidents are not limited to central parts of the city. The shoe thief has also struck in outlying layouts of Bengaluru, including Kengeri, Madanayakanahalli and Annapurneshwari Nagar. The rising number of thefts has forced residents to reconsider the practice of leaving footwear outside their homes.
Police Set Trap to Nab the Accused
Based on CCTV footage collected from affected areas, the Annapurneshwari Nagar police have intensified their investigation. Although the suspect’s face is not clearly visible due to the monkey cap and mask, police are analysing his body movements and walking pattern to identify him. Efforts are also underway to trace known offenders who may match the suspect’s profile.
