An elderly couple from Uttar Pradesh’s Barambari were living together from 50 years. The man, Sukumar is now 80 and the woman, Rajpatha Devi is 70. Both fell in love with each other at a young age. But back then he did not have enough money to marry his lady love.
Both took a decision not to marry but to stay together. The couple worked hard as daily wage labourers and started saving money. Eventually, the couple had three sons and two daughters. Everything was going fine with the family, and the couple was busy working and looking after the children.
They had almost forgotten that they were not married yet. Years passed, and then their children got married. Even they have children now, thus technically they are grandparents.
The twist
Speaking about his relationship with Rajpatha Devi, Sukumar says they share a special and strong bond. I don’t remember us having any problem in our personal life due to the societal pressure.
But after all these years (50 years of living together) Rajpatha Devi casually mentioned to her children ‘What if we I get married now before we end the life’s journey?’ Children took the casual talk seriously and tried to convince their father, Sukumar to agree for the wedding. Though initially, Sukumar said no, then he did not want to disappoint his lovely wife and agreed to the children and wife’s wish.
Thus, Rajpatha Devi was dressed as a bride and Sukumar got married to his long-time partner and sweetheart after 50 years of togetherness. Not only the relatives but the entire village witnessed this special wedding.
Some residents of the village were shocked to know that the couple was not married. “They were living so happily, we never even suspected that they were not married. They are the most wonderful couple we have ever seen,” told the elderly members of the village.
