Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has condemned the beheading of a tailor in Udaipur over remarks supporting expelled BJP leader Nupur Sharma. Calling the incident 'shameful', the chief minister told reporters that it was high time PM Narendra Modi addressed the nation and appealed for peace.

"It's a sad & shameful incident. There's a tense atmosphere in the nation today. Why don't PM & Amit Shah ji address the nation? There is tension among people. PM should address the public and say that such violence won't be tolerated & appeal for peace," Gehlot said while assuring strict punishment for those invovled.

27-year-old Kanhaiya Lal was beheaded at his shop by two men Udaipur, Rajasthan, on Tuesday, and the assailants filmed the crime. The two accused reached the victim's shop in the afternoon under the Dhan Mandi police station area.

One of the assailants, who was identified as Riyaz, attacked Kanhaiya Lal with a sharp-edged weapon while the other recorded the crime on his mobile phone. Soon after, they circulated a video of themselves confessing to the killing on social media.

Kanhaiya Lal, a resident of Govardhan Vilas area, posted comments on social media ten days ago in favour of Sharma, who was removed from BJP after outrage over her remarks insulting Prophet Muhammad. Since then, he had been receiving death threats. The tailor reportedly had kept his shop shut since then and only opened shutters today.

Around 3000 police personnel were deployed after the gruesome murder and a special team has been formed to investigate the matter.

Udaipur SP Manoj Chowdhary said that as soon as the information was received, police personnel were rushed to the spot. A team has also been sent to capture those who took responsibility for the murder. Senior police and administration officials, including Collector Tarachand Meena and SP Manoj Chaudhary, are camping at the spot.  

Leader of Opposition Gulabchand Kataria called the SP and inquired about the incident. He said that the accused should be caught soon while conducting a fair investigation.
