Rajasthan DGP ML Lather informed that two persons involved in the incident were detained from the neighbouring Rajsamand district of the state.

Gehlot appeals for peace

Condemning the murder, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot vowed to ensure the strictest punishment for those responsible. At the same time, he appealed to people to maintain peace. Gehlot also appealed to people not to spoil the peaceful atmosphere by sharing the video of the incident on social media.

Chief Minister Gehlot said that the atmosphere in the whole country is deteriorating. He said that the priority at the moment is to ensure that tensions are reduced.

At the same time, Gehlot questioned the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah over growing instances of hate speech.

"I have been repeatedly asking PM Narendra Modi and Amit Shah to address the country in this tense atmosphere. Everyone is apprehensive. PM Modi should come forward on such an occasion and appeal for peace and say that he will not tolerate violence at any cost. An appeal should be made to maintain love and brotherhood," Gehlot said.

Kanhaiya faced threats

Kanhaiya Lal, a resident of Govardhan Vilas area, posted comments on social media 10 days ago in favour of Sharma who was removed from BJP after outrage over her remarks insulting Prophet Mohammad. Since then, he had been receiving death threats. According to reports, Kanhaiya -- a tailor by profession -- had kept his shop shut since then, and had opened shutters only on Tuesday. He was brutally attacked with chopping knives inside his shop

Leader of Opposition Gulabchand Kataria also called the SP and inquired about the incident. He said that while conducting a fair investigation, the accused should be caught soon.

Curfew imposed, Internet cut

The administration has imposed prohibitory orders in Udaipur following Kanhaiya's killing. Earlier in the evening, Internet services were curtailed amid rising tensions in the area.

The police have formed a special team to investigate the matter. As the news of the murder spread, protests, though peaceful thus far, erupted across the state. The Cyber Police is also keeping an eye on all the social media handles.

Udaipur SP Manoj Chowdhary said that as soon as the information was received, police personnel were rushed to the spot. Senior police and administration officials, including Collector Tarachand Meena and SP Manoj Chaudhary, are camping at the spot.
