The people from Tulu speaking belt in Coastal Karnataka and outside the region have echoed in unison to accord official language status for Tulu.

Claiming that the language is one of ancient Dravidian languages, and now under threat, a demand to include it in 8th schedule has been made.

The campaign gained momentum after MLA Capt Ganesh Karnik from the region took to twitter demanding the same. He wrote, "On behalf of Tuluvas of Tulunadu, in recognition of our immense contributions, may I request you to accord official status for Tulu language & urge the central Govt to include Tulu language in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution.?

This tweet soon sparked similar emotions and even Karnataka BJP President Nalin Kumar Kateel expressed his solidarity to the campaign which goes by the #TuluOfficialinKA_KL and #TuluTo8thSchedule.

The campaign so far has crossed 3 lakh tweets attracting responses from famous personalities including filmmaker Rakshit Shetty. The actor-director wrote, "Tulu is the only one among the five popular Dravidian languages which hasn’t got its due. Request @CMofKarnataka to have a look into this campaign and do the needful #TuluTo8thSchedule #TuluOfficialinKA_KL."

People from the region say that Tulu is not just a language, it is a culture. It has a rich tradition, its own calendar year and also its own script.
