HRD ministry orders IITs, central universities to host rock bands singing patriotic songs

Students at IITs and central universities across the country would soon have to groove to patriotic music by rock bands visiting their campuses.
The Human Resource Development Ministry has asked these institutions to host music bands that would be performing patriotic numbers.
The HRD Ministry wrote to these institutions asking them to host rock groups that would perform on campuses under a programme dubbed "Yeh India Ka Time Hai" (This is India's time).
According to the plan, conceived by Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani, the bands, around half a dozen, would visit campuses and perform patriotic numbers, mostly from Bollywood.
"A private entertainment firm has been taken on board which has identified around a dozen rock bands. The shows will be planned in various institutions over the next month," a senior official said.
The programme has been organised to celebrate 70 years of India's Independence and 75 years of the Quit India Movement this year.
Earlier, the University Grants Commission (UGC) had asked the institutions to organise a series of programmes like quiz contests and administer to students an oath to make possible the Prime Minister's vision of a New India free of evils like corruption, casteism and communalism.
