IISc student commits suicide police suspect depression as cause

Bengaluru: A 24-year-old research student of Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru, committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling in his hostel room on Tuesday. Police have suspected that he might have been suffering from depression.

According to the police, Ameya Manoj Chutke, hailing from Nagpur, may have committed suicide at around 12:15 am.

The incident came to light when his friends came to his room, who later alerted the hostel authorities. The police were later informed by the hostel authorities.

Ameya had completed his MTech in computer architecture and systems lab in 2019 and was pursuing a PhD in the computer science and automation department. He had secured the 82nd rank (all-India) in GATE in 2017.

Ameya had spoken to his mother for at least 30 minutes over the phone at around 8pm on Monday.

According to Ameya’s parents, he was being treated for depression at Nimhans as well as at a health care centre in IISc.

A case has been registered by the Sadashivanagar Police.
