Delhi Records Hottest May Night in Nearly 14 Years

Delhi residents are struggling through relentless heat as temperatures continue to remain dangerously high even after sunset. The capital recorded its warmest May night in almost 14 years, with Safdarjung observatory registering a minimum temperature of 31.9°C. The figure was more than five degrees above normal and marked the hottest May night since 2012.

Several areas across the city witnessed daytime temperatures crossing 45°C. Ridge emerged as the hottest location at 45.3°C, while Ayanagar, Palam and Lodhi Road also reported extremely high temperatures. The continuous rise in both day and night temperatures has left many residents exhausted and sleep deprived.

IMD Issues Orange Alert as Heatwave Likely to Continue

The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Delhi, warning that the heatwave is expected to persist for at least the next seven days. According to forecasts, maximum temperatures may continue hovering between 44°C and 45°C till May 27, while nighttime temperatures are expected to remain unusually high.

Weather experts say dry northwesterly winds coming from Rajasthan and nearby desert regions are intensifying the heat across the capital. These hot winds prevent cooling and trap warm air near the surface, making conditions uncomfortable throughout the day and night.

Meteorologists have also pointed out that the absence of thunderstorms or pre-monsoon rainfall is worsening the situation. Without rain activity, the ground is unable to release the heat absorbed during the daytime, resulting in persistently warm nights.

Rising Health Risks and Poor Air Quality Add to Concerns

Health experts have warned that the prolonged heatwave may increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke, particularly among children, senior citizens and outdoor workers. Authorities have advised people to avoid stepping outside during peak afternoon hours and to stay hydrated.

The intense heat has also affected Delhi’s air quality. Dust-filled winds and dry conditions pushed the city’s Air Quality Index into the “poor” category, with AQI levels reaching 209. Experts believe the combination of severe heat and deteriorating air quality could further impact public health in the coming days.

Residents are being urged to wear light cotton clothing, drink sufficient water and limit outdoor exposure unless necessary as the capital continues to battle one of its toughest heat spells in recent years.
