On Thursday, Chahal's wife DhanashreeVermatook to her Instagram handle to share a story, that read, "My parents in law have tested positive with severe symptoms. My father in law is admitted and my mother in law is being treated at home. I was at the hospital and I have witnessed the worst. I'm taking all the precautions, but guys, please stay at home and take proper care of your family."
"It's been really tough and challenging for me as mother and brother tested positive. I was in IPL bubble and felt extremely helpless but did monitor them time to time. It's really difficult to stay away from your family. Fortunately, they've recovered. But I lost my aunt and my very close uncle due to covid and its complications," she further wrote.
Meanwhile, he has become one of the few Indian cricketers after Ravichandran Ashwin and MS Dhoni, whose family has been affected by the same. Also, Indian umpire Nitin Menon withdrew from IPL 2021 for the same reason.
Chahal is already having a tough time in his professional career, as he could barely fire in the currently-suspended 2021 Indian Premier League. Playing in seven games, he could manage just four wickets at an economy of 8.26.
Also, his international career has taken a hit owing to some low-string performances. Consequently, he has been demoted in the annual contract list by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, dropping from Grade B (₹3 crore) to C (₹1 crore).
