The Election Commission of India has issued a show-cause notice to senior DMK leader A Raja over his derogatory remarks against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami and his mother.

Based on ground reports, the Commission said that it is of the view that "the contents of the speech made by you are not only derogatory but also obscene and lower the dignity of motherhood of women, which seems to be a serious violation of the provisions of Model Code of Conduct."

The Commission has given him "an opportunity to explain your position in this regard on or before 6 pm on March 31, failing which the Commission shall take a decision without any further reference to you."

As per the model code, “criticism of other political parties, when made, shall be confined to their policies and programme, past record and work. Parties and Candidates shall refrain from criticism of all aspects of private life, not connected with the public activities of the leaders or workers of other parties. Criticism of other parties or their workers based on unverified allegations or distortion shall be avoided".

In a clipping from the rally, A Raja can be heard saying that Stalin's political career is like that of "a fully matured baby born legitimately" while "EPS is like a premature baby born out of an illegitimate relationship".

At the rally, A Raja also compared CM EPS' worth to MK Stalin's 'slippers'. He said, "Till the other day, Edappadi Palaniswami worked in jaggery market, how can he be competition to Stalin? The value of Stalin’s chappal is more than you by one rupee. And he dares Stalin to challenge him?”

The EC also referred to some other remarks made by Raja against the Chief Minister.
