T20 World Cup 2021, BAN vs PNG (Qualifier 9): Bangladesh qualifies for Super12s with 84-run win
The 2021 ICC T20 World Cup is nearly done with its Qualifiers. Meanwhile, Bangladesh has qualified for the Super 12s following an impressive 84-run win over Papua New Guinea in Muscat on Thursday.
It was a splendid performance by Bangladesh. It outlasted Papua New Guinea (PNG) by 84 runs in Group B's Qualifier 9 of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 at the Al Amerat Cricket Ground (Ministry Turf 1) in Muscat on Thursday. With this win, Bangladesh has sealed its place in the Super 12s, while its place in the group table is still uncertain.
Winning the toss, Bangladesh skipper Mahmudullah opted to bat as he moved in with the same XI. At the same time, PNG captain Assad Valla made a couple of changes, bringing in Hiri Hiri and Ravu for Ura and Pakuna. Bangladesh lost Mohammad Naim (0) in the second ball of the opening over, with no runs on the board.
However, fellow opener Liton Das (29), along with Shakib Al Hasan (46), put up a 50 run stand before the latter departed to Vala in the eighth, followed by Mushfiqur Rahim (5) in the 11th, 12 runs later, to Simon Atai. At 101, Shakib fell to Vala. It was again followed by a promising 43-run partnership between Mahmudullah (50) and Afif Hossain (21), as the skipper fell right after scoring his sixth T20I half-century to Damien Ravu in the 18th.
The same over also saw Nurul Hasan (0) fall to the same man at 153, while eight runs later, in the next over, Afif departed to Kabua Morea, as Bangladesh posted an above-par total of 181/7. Seven bowlers were utilised by PNG, with Morea, Ravu and Vala claiming a couple each, while Charles Amini was very economical.
In reply, PNG was off to a jittery start, losing Lega Siaka (5), Vala (6), Amini (1) and Atai (0) within the fifth over of the PP with just 14 runs on the board. Ten runs later, Sese Bau (7) too made his way back to spinner Shakib in the ninth, followed by Norman Vanua (0) at the same score to spinner Mahedi Hasan in the subsequent over.
PNG just couldn't get the partnerships going, fuelled by the added scoreboard pressure, as Hiri (8) fell to Shakib in the 11th, three runs later. A 25-run stand ensured between Kiplin Doriga (46*) and Chad Soper (11), with both being the only ones to enter double figures. At 54, in the 15th, Soper was knocked over by Saifuddin, while 26 runs later, Morea (3) was tun out in the 18th.
At 97, in the final over, Ravu (5) was the last man to depart to Taskin Ahmed, as Bangladesh scripted an emphatic 84-run win, thus shooting up the table and sealing its Super 12s berth. Bangladesh put five bowlers into the attack, with Shakib claiming a four-for, while he scripted an economy of just 2.20.
Brief scores: Bangladesh 181/7 (Shakib- 46, Mahmudullah- 50; Vala- 2/26) defeats PNG 97 in 19.3 overs (Doriga- 46; Shakib- 4/9) by 84 runs.
